About the Placement process
The Placement and Internship Office at IIT Madras works hard throughout the year to see that every student at IIT Madras has the opportunity to join the job of their dreams - whether it is in "core engineering" or not.
The student team at the office represent the student community's needs and wants. They approach companies and invite them to come to campus to interview students.
Companies have to register with the placement team. They are given "slots." The most lucrative companies are given priority slots, i.e. they come first.
Slots are given from December to April. December 1 is "day 1" - you can imagine it is a very important day for final year students.
Each company has it's own criterea for each role - based on courses completed, or grades, or a qualifying test. Since there are a variety of roles on offer, each student can apply for multiple roles - of different types.
Having said that, each student can accept only one offer.
Yes, it is the same overall system - but few things maybe different. And definitely, the actual numbers will be different from one IIT to another.
Beyond Jobs
A lot of students at IIT Madras prefer to apply to universities for further studies - masters or PhD. Students apply to top colleges like MIT, Stanford, Harvard, and so on.
Some students prefer to do an MBA at a top school - like IIMs, ISB or MBA schools abroad.
The startup culture in IIT Madras is very strong. A large number of students don't "sit for placements" because they have their own startup or are joining another one. Take a look at this video of a startup from campus which was featured on Shark Tank India 2022-23.
Students in IIT chart their own path. This is enabled by an academic system that allows a lot of flexibility and a campus culture that promotes experimentation.
The most important thing is for students at IIT to explore and find what they truly enjoy.
